A woman said she had to take her 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer to the dealership after what she thought was a transmission issue.
Coco posted a video on TikTok explaining that, in early July, her two-year-old car began having trouble shifting into reverse.
Her father suspected it might be a sensor issue and started looking for chewed wires under the hood, but found nothing.
When she took the vehicle to the dealership, she received bad news. “If rodents have anything to do with the situation, then basically the warranty will be null and void,” said a specialist.
Indeed, insurers warn that manufacturer warranties do not cover rodent damage. After waiting a week at the dealership, the diagnosis confirmed that the damage had been caused by rodents.
Coco’s father paid for the repair but asked for a photo showing the damage. The image revealed extensive damage to a large component that protects the electrical harnesses.
“It was like a big round thing that spread out like ropes. They chewed through the whole thing until nothing was left,” Coco said.
The team quickly concluded that the damage couldn’t have been caused by rats but rather by squirrels. Coco immediately remembered the gang of squirrels living near her home and connected the dots.
But why would squirrels attack car wires? It turns out that modern cars often use soy-based materials in their wiring harnesses, which reduces toxic waste in landfills. Unfortunately, this greener alternative is also irresistible to rodents.
Although the repair cost less than $200 and left Coco without a car “for almost two weeks,” the critters persisted.
She said that just an hour after parking outside again, another squirrel was already back under the hood looking for food. In Coco’s case, the only solution will be to always park the car in a closed garage.
